Danios are active and hardy freshwater fish known for their peaceful temperament, vibrant colors, and constant movement. Native mainly to Eastern India, they inhabit shallow streams, floodplains, and mature rice paddies with plenty of overhanging vegetation. Most species grow to around 6 cm, while Giant Danios can reach 8 cm or more. They typically live for about five years and swim mainly in the top and middle levels of the aquarium, making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists.
Danios thrive in water temperatures of 18–24°C, a pH of 7.0–7.5, and a general hardness of 100–150 ppm. They are omnivorous and readily accept a variety of aquarium foods, including floating flakes, crumbles, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp. Their peaceful nature makes them suitable for community aquariums, although they are highly active and may chase one another during play. Danios are also relatively easy to breed, scattering hundreds of eggs that fall to the bottom of the tank. Since adults may eat their eggs, removing them after spawning helps improve breeding success.
