Gobies are diverse freshwater fish found in rivers, lakes, and estuaries, with some species also requiring slightly brackish water. They vary greatly in size, from the tiny Bumblebee Goby, which grows to around 2 cm, to species that can reach 15 cm. One distinctive feature of gobies is their fused pelvic fins, which form a suction disk that helps them grip surfaces in their environment.
Gobies thrive in well-maintained aquariums with suitable water conditions, fine gravel or sand, and plenty of hiding places among plants, rocks, and caves. Some species are territorial, so their grouping and compatibility requirements depend on the species. A secure aquarium cover is essential because gobies can jump when startled. Regular water testing, proper filtration, and consistent maintenance help keep these unique freshwater fish healthy.
