Get to know platy fish

A small freshwater fish with a light-colored body and a dark blue and black stripe running along its side.

Platies are popular freshwater fish native to Mexico and Central America, admired for their vibrant colors, diverse patterns, and lively personalities. Common varieties include Mickey Mouse, Sunburst, Red Wag, Blue, and Bumblebee Platies, each offering distinctive colors and markings. Typically growing around 5–7 cm, these hardy fish are suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarium enthusiasts. Their wide range of appearances is largely the result of selective breeding and crossbreeding between related species.

Platies are adaptable, peaceful community fish that are relatively easy to care for when provided with clean water, a balanced diet, and suitable tank conditions. As livebearers, they give birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs, and they can reproduce readily in home aquariums. Platies generally do well with other peaceful fish of similar size and thrive in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of swimming space. With proper care, they can live for around 3–4 years, bringing color and activity to freshwater aquariums.
