If you’re an importer or aquarium store owner in Europe looking for a supplier, this guide will help you choose with confidence. The question is no longer “who sells at the lowest price?” What matters more is this: does the supplier understand the import rules of your country, will the fish arrive healthy, and is the paperwork complete?
This article covers all of that for wholesale ornamental fish in Europe: the differences between tropical and marine fish, how regulations differ across the European Union, the UK, and other European countries, the documents you need to prepare, and how to evaluate a supplier.
European Ornamental Fish Market Trends
Ornamental fish include freshwater tropical fish, marine fish, and cold-water fish kept in home aquariums, aquascapes, and commercial spaces. Interest in aquariums continues to grow across countries, including in Europe, where many hobbyists want to bring tropical aquatic ecosystems into their homes.
According to Grand View Research (2024), the European ornamental fish market was valued at around USD 2.45 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 4.15 billion by 2030, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9%. Europe accounts for about 38.5% of global ornamental fish market revenue. Germany is the largest market in the region with a share of around 19.5%, followed by the UK at around 13.8%. These figures are market research projections, not official trade data, and they may differ between publishers.
For the marine segment, there is more concrete import data. The European Union is the largest importer of marine ornamental fish by value, with trade worth around €24 million per year and roughly 26 million fish entering between 2014 and 2021 (Biondo et al., 2024). This figure covers marine fish only and is based on import data, so it cannot be compared directly with the market size estimates above.
For importers, this means demand is strong and expected to keep growing, but the trade is closely monitored.
Tropical Fish vs. Marine Fish:
Which Is Better for Importers?
Wholesale Tropical Fish Europe
Freshwater tropical fish are the most sought-after segment among aquarium stores because they are diverse, relatively affordable, and suitable for beginners. From a business perspective, they are easier to sell repeatedly, since hobbyists often keep adding to their collections. From an environmental perspective, many tropical species are now successfully bred in captivity, and captive-bred fish have become an important buying criterion for hobbyists.
Wholesale Marine Fish Europe
Marine fish offer more attractive margins, but they come with greater risk and closer regulatory attention. Most marine ornamental fish are wild-caught, and in October 2022 the European Parliament highlighted the need to monitor this trade. Importers buying marine fish should ask for clear information on origin, species, and documentation from the very start.
Every European Country Has Its Own Regulations
This is the most common mistake. “Europe” covers several different regulatory regimes.
| Destination | Key points | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | Imports from non-EU countries are governed by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/692, and aquatic animal health certificates by Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/2236. Shipments enter through a Border Control Post (BCP) and are notified via TRACES. | Requirements differ between fish destined for closed and open ornamental facilities. |
| United Kingdom | Has its own external border. Shipments must be accompanied by a health certificate, enter through a Border Control Post, and be recorded in the IPAFFS system. | UK rules can change, so check with the authorities before shipping. |
| Non-EU Europe (e.g., Turkey, North Macedonia) | Follows each country’s national rules. | Verify with a local importer or the local veterinary authority. |
In addition, species listed under CITES require extra permits, and some specific species have their own restrictions.
How to Evaluate a Supplier?
Here are practical criteria to ask about before your first order: (These are recommendations, not an official standard)
Export experience to your country. Ask which destination countries they have actually served, not just “we export to Europe.”
Documentation readiness. Does the supplier understand health certificates, packing lists, and the processes you need?
Species and origin transparency. Especially for marine fish. Ask for a species list with scientific names.
Pre-shipment handling. Quarantine, fasting period, and packing conditions determine the mortality rate on arrival.
DOA (dead on arrival) policy. Make sure the claim rules are clear upfront, including time limits and the evidence required.
Shipping schedule and routes. Transit time and layovers affect fish health.
Why Aqua Marindo?
The criteria above are exactly what we built our export operation around.
Facilities you can see for yourself.
Aqua Marindo operates its own coral farm and holding facilities in Indonesia, and importers are welcome to visit in person.Careful pre-shipment handling. Every shipment goes through quarantine period and packing standards before it leaves our facility, because this is what determines the condition of your fish on arrival.
Hands-on help with documentation. We help prepare and coordinate the paperwork your shipment needs, including (health certificates, packing lists, CITES permits where applicable, and other export documents). We also adjust procedures to the requirements of your destination, whether it’s an EU member state, the UK, or a non-EU country.
Species transparency. We provide species lists with scientific names and clear information on origin, so you know exactly what you are buying.
A clear DOA policy. Claim terms, time limits, and required evidence are agreed upfront, so there are no surprises after delivery.
Proven export experience across Europe. We have shipped to Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Turkey, the UK, Germany, and Finland. Because these destinations include EU members, the UK, and non-EU countries, we are used to adapting our documentation and shipping procedures to each country’s requirements
